Tackling Allergy Season, Naturally!

seasonal-allergies.jpg

I’ve had seasonally allergies since I can remember––spring and summers of red watery eyes, snot dripping down my face, going through a box of kleenex a day, you know…all the sexy stuff that comes with seasonal allergies (eye roll).

I was really sick of taking allergy meds that made me feel drowsy. Even the non-drowsy stuff would make me feel “off” or it wasn’t effective at all. I wanted to find natural ways to manage my seasonal allergies and have found some things that have definitely helped!

Allergy Defense Tonic - Organic Olivia

This tonic contains herbs with antihistamine, decongestant, and bronchio-dilating effects! It’s non-drowsy (goodbye to the days when allergy pills knocked me on my ass for the whole day!!) and it can be taken 2-4 weeks before allergy season to be preventative. But also can be used as a daily acute remedy.

I would say this has been the biggest game changer for me!

Fallen Pollen Tea - Tippecanoe Herbs

I LOVE Tippecanoe products. I do think that getting local herbs and produce are the best because your environment is providing what is best for you where you are and for your current climate. So when I found Tippecanoe and learned that he gets his herbs from Midwestern prairies and forests––this WI girl was SOLD!

This tea is specifically for allergies and contains some incredible herbs: Elderflower, Goldrenrod, Elderberry, Gotu Kola, Chamomile, Nettle, Cinnamon, Bilberry Leaf, Licorice, Marshmallow leaf (which is also great for the digestive system).

Air doctor Air Purifier

Indoor air can have pollen, dust, Bacteria/viruses, pet dander, mold spores, smoke, invisible gases and volatile organic compounds––so you can see why your allergies may be going crazy in your house right now!

I first learned about the AirDoctor in a medical course my hubs and I took last year. There was a whole lesson on air quality and how much it can effect your health on every level. Our ears perked up immediately and we saved to invest in this system.

The AirDoctor has an UltraHEPA™ Filter and also a dual action Carbon/Gas Trap/VOC Filter. The UltraHepa is said to be 100 times more effective than ordinary HEPA filters, and it captures 100% of some of the most dangerous ultra fine particles that are up to .003 microns in size. The dual action Carbon/Gas Trap/VOC Filter is said to remove dangerous ozone, gas and VOC’S (volatile organic compounds) like formaldehyde.

We actually have two AirDoctors now––one for the house and one for our office. We love that it has an auto setting and that it also tells you when the filters need to be changed.

It is a pricey system but worth it! There are a lot of discount codes where you can get $300 off (which we utilized for both purchases).

maintaining healthy habits

This one may sound obvious and kind of vague, but it’s a BIGGENS!

I have been trying to eat more seasonally - (lots of greens right now–lettuce mixes, asparagus, etc). Spring is the time is said to be the season of growth and action. This is a good time to eat sour foods to cleanse and stimulate the system – (lemons, tomatoes, and green apples). If you’d like to eat more local produce I would suggest reaching out to local organic farms and seeing what CSA programs they offer! Also make trips to your local farmer’s market as often as you can.

I’ve read that your organs also have seasons…CRAZY! Spring’s organ is the liver. So to maintain my liver and kidney function I’ve been using Organic Olivia’s Liver Juice and using castor oil packs.

OTHER TIPS

  1. Use Xlear Nasal Spray to clear allergens from nasal passages.

  2. Go to Pollen.com to see a 5-day forecast for pollen counts near you so you can avoid going outside in high pollen count days as much as possible.

  3. If you have to be outside when allergens are high, make sure to change your clothes when you get in the house, rinse off, and keep windows closed and air filter on.

  4. Do facial steams with essential oils.
